I'm use to gardening in the south (MS and TN) and most things do great until summer heat hits. Basically, do your average plants need much tlc or do plants generally thrive?

1) keep more focused on known varieties / native or bred in PNW
2) Be very aware of your chosen location (SUN / wind exposure, soils, elevation, micro climate) In our county the annual rain amt varies from 30" to 120" . Elevation is critical, airflow (local inversions) are very different. I have 7 distinct climate Zones between my home and town (5 miles and 1200').
3) Lime, oh yes LIME and more LIME + winter fertilizers and ground covers and SAND (in my region)
4) Some plants are very susceptible to root rot, they need to be hilled or in raised beds.
5) Hot Frames are a big Plus, as is SHELTER / mulch once the sun comes out (July 5th)
6) AIR flow.. very important to dry leaves / avoid mold / mildew.
7) SUN (I plant N-S rows, so crops get morning and / or afternoon sun (they probably don't see full days of sun till AFTER 5 Jul)
8) Old timers can be your friend. Join Master Gardeners (WSU) Very fun, very helpful, very rewarding.
9) Consider a specialty that you are successful with. TOO much stuff grows well, it is EZ to become overwhelmed. If your Neighbors have zucchini and Rhubarb, you can focus on something else.
10) Edible Landscape is EXCELLENT use of space and landscape (We got 300# of blueberries last yr + the neighbors got all they wanted). LOTS of herbs.
Some plants / fruits are just not worth the bother of trying to keep healthy in Western WA. (You can buy from our numerous and 'friendly' eastside growers (who are VERY affordable and adaptable wholesalers
.
We_t side grows GREAT berries and Prunes, but tough to consistently get Cherries, peaches, and apricots (stone fruits).
Lots of resources to help you out. (a few Radio show hosts listed here)
