Recently I bought a house with a fig tree that is about 4feet by 4 feet. The first green leaves are just sprouting. How should I care for this tree. What fertilizer, mulch etc. What sprays should I be prepared to use on it. We have sandy loam soil and thankfully a well fed sprinkler. When the fruit comes should I protect it from the water sprinkler?

Fig trees are very low maintenance. Your biggest problem will be birds stealing the fruit.

I suggest that you not spray anything routinely. If it develops a problem, then spray at that time with something specific for that problem, but you might never need to spray it.
