Hello all --

I've endured garden heartbreak the last 2 summers I've lived in TX. If it's not the heat, it's the drought or the rabbits (nothing ever seems to keep them down for long!).

Despite these odds, I want to add a little color to the front yard, which faces north and also has a lot of trees, so therefore, not much sun.

Suggestions appreciated!

New Guinea impatiens will grow in the heat and the shade, they do very well in Texas. As a bedding plant they tend to be kind of pricey but they are a glitz of color.

And your standard issue cheap bedding begonias will grow there too. You've probably seen them in every yard for 100 miles.

Caladiums are good too. There are hundreds of varieties.

Try some rose bushes from a local nursery. Roses love a dry climate and do well in eithere shade or bright sun. Rabbits, deer, and other critters leave then alone.
