I am really reluctant to use a weed and feed type due to the 2,4-D. But my yard...holy crap. One side of the house recently turned into a field of daisies when I did not mow for a couple of weeks. And I have dogs so would like something to reduce the insects in the grass in the backyard and try to keep any fire ants from taking up residence. Would it be worthwhile to mix a Weed and Feed with a fertilizer with an insect controller in it? So while I am still using odious, nasty chemicals, at least I am only using half as much of each? Or maybe even cut both with regular fertilizer too? I REALLY don't want to use 2,4-D (increased asthma risk for kids and my two came at 25 weeks and got early diagnosis of asthma but it SEEMS to be completely gone now) but that is getting more tempered with time by my hatred of all the *&%$ weeds.

Also can I plant grass seed if I have put weed and feed on the lawn?? I don't think it's the right time of the year but will I at least get some growth if I plant it now (bermuda, in Texas).

Thanks!!

Start with finding TEXAS sources of information. (maybe THIS one?) (my main NC source)
Do the evaluation of what you have and make a plan based on proven data.

Most plans will start in Fall, even here.

Bermuda is a warm/hot weather grass and the seed needs to be sowed early in the season when the night time temps are 65 degrees and higher for at least 3 days in a row. Weed and feed at sowing time may burn the seed. I would not recommend that. Get rid of the weeds first then sow the seed afterwards.

We were instructed that if we put down weed and feed to wait a month before using grass seed. If we just use fertilizer we can put the seed down without waiting.

OK, should I just wait to weed and feed? Get the grass in now that I have used regular fertilizer? Wait....how long for weed and feed?

Make life easier. Address the weeds with your fall application. Most weeds, except for things like crabgrass, are best controlled in the fall anyway.

We weed and feed 1st of May to avoid dandelions and crabgrass, then seed first of June and again in the fall.

MrRational, I am in DFW. And this year, I want a decent lawn. As decent as one can have when there is a dog who likes to dig in the back yard :|

Dandelions germinate in the fall, grow during winter (they're "winter weeds") and bloom mostly in the spring. Weeds are not easily controlled when they're blooming. Any extension office will recommend controlling winter weeds like dandelions in the fall.
