When I lived in Austin, TX, I had a couple of pots of chives. I started them from seed. It took a while for them to really get a start, but they were extremely reliable, supplying me with chives about 10 months of the year, taking a few months off in the winter. I had these pots for 5 years, then gave them away when I moved. I moved to northern California, and planted a nice pot of chives. This time I started them from 2" pots bought at a nursery rather than from seeds. They went great guns for a while, getting huge and lush. Then suddenly they were infested with small black insects, an the whole pot died. When I lived in Texas, I never saw a bug on them. So I am wondering if there are different strains of chives that are more or less susceptible to insect attack, or which are more reliable. Is it better to start them from seed?

Probably, but more likely you just have different bugs there. My pot of chives has been going 7 years, and so far only a couple of times they had spittle bugs, I just hose them off.
