Yes, I am planting 4 japanese maples. I bought them from a local grower and looked at several that he sold to neighbors that had grown for about 3 years. He also had several planted next to his house in the late 90's and they were very healthy. It is an orangeola and should grow to 3 feet by 4 feet. Unlike most japanese maples, these can be pruned easily without damaging. My wife scrapped the yellow shrubs and bought firepower nandina... I am happy with that decision.

We are doing this bed without help. I may learn through mistakes but I am enjoying it. This weekend we are conditioning the bed by tilling (has a rich top layer), adding tree/shrub soil and pine bark. I plan to build up and mound the bed significantly to make sure the maples have well drained soil. I do not want the roots sitting in clay because the water will pool and drown them.

Well, this has been a lot of WORK and so much FUN. I am almost finished and will provide updated pic soon.

I still need to plant something small/dwarf under my windows. I like the purple pixie but the crape myrtle blocks sun for one. Anyone had success with purple pixie in limited sun (2 hours/day)?

sorry- what is purple pixie. If the tag or info says full sun you will have horrible results in 2 hours of sun.

Sorry about that - purple pixie loropetalum (small version of purple diamond loropetalum). It grows 1-2ft tall and 4 wide. Tag says full or part sun. I have seen them in the neighborhood in areas similar to mine and they seem healthy.

but I think the desired coloration would be missing in less than optimum sun.

I am looking at Purple Diamond and would like to know how they have done. My area is similar to yours and I like the deep purple color. Any update appreciated.

Orangeola do great in the south. I planted 2 last year and the growth rate is unbelievable. You will not be disappointed with results. It would be great to see an updated picture because I know they are beautiful bright red/green this time of year.
