This vine has appeared on my terrace fence. I assume it is a weed but I have not seen anything else like it around here. Any idea what it is?

It would help if the actual buds and leaves were in focus but as far as I can tell it looks like a sweet autumn clematis, aka Sweet Autumn Virgin's Bower. The Latin name is Clematis terniflora.

It is considered to be a pretty invasive vine and can grow to quite prodigious lengths (supposedly up to 30 feet or so, although I have seen them cover more territory than that).

Thanks J & Em! I know the photo isn't great; I had to resize it twice before it let me post it. I thnk you are right--the photo on the link you sent me looks identical.
Well, it is a big improvement over the English ivy that I cannot get rid of.

ETA: Where the heck would this have come from? There is nothing like this around.
