I got very motivated and chopped down about 15 large shrubs in my yard. I have no idea what they were but they were UGLY. What is the best way to get rid of the stumps without spending a fortune? Some are relatively small but the largest has about 30 1-2" branches coming out of the ground. I've read posts about having them ground down but won't they just start growing back eventually? Plus I'd like to plant some hedges where most of them were.

Pay some guys/gals to do it for under $100 per. Probably WAY under $100 if they are shrubs, not trees.
Check craigslist.

Can you provide a name for that product and how long it takes to decompose? Thanks.

Get a shovel, a San Angelo bar, and a teenager.

For some shrubs, I've just dug down to expose the roots, cut the roots with loppers or a saw...and pulled them out. How feasible this is depends on the root structure of your shrubs. It can be a lot of work, but it's cheap.

Wrap the stumps as best as you can with a chain or strap. You might need to dig under the stump, through some of the roots. Attach the chain/strap to the frame of the car/truck/tractor. Haul away! Works for shrubs but not trees. I have also used jackmighigan's method. An axe will also work if you have a strong back.

Pull out shrubs; grind trees.

The stuff you use to decompose the stumps takes forever (or at least it will seem that way...).

On the farm I've done that with Chinese elm stumps and a small Ford 8n tractor. However, I let the stumps rot for about 2 years. They pulled out very easily even in this very tight clay soil.
