LOL - we had a similar arrangement back in the days. Cut a huge book shelf into a bench and back; used plywood and hinges to make storage for apartment dwellers.
I always see pallets used in DIY projects online. Where are people obtaining so many cheap/free pallets? Especially pallets in decent condition? When I worked in a warehouse we guarded our pallets like gold; they're not exactly cheap. Are people just taking them like you can (illegally) do with milk crates?
Gardening in rain gutters and milk jugs would require a lot of maintenance unless some sort of automatic watering system was set up. There isn't enough soil mass to keep moisture in, IMHO. Although, rain gutters and milk jugs are water tight, so they wouldn't lose water except from the drain areas.
We have some concrete planters set in a somewhat windy spot and those are great for things that like dry, so I suppose what it planted in the planters makes a difference, too. I still kinda consider something the size of a five gallon bucket about the smallest planter you'd want, though, unless you were the type who liked daily gardening.
