Commonly called "air plants", epiphytic plants include bromeliads, orchids, lichens, and some species of ferns and of cacti and succulents.
I have many here at my house, including a huge staghorn. I live in south Florida.
I have a little air fern that I bought in 2003. I put it in a little vase and it stayed about the same size for many years, because my cat kept nibbling it. When I moved in 2004 I packed it up with my kitchen things because that is where I kept it. After moving I just forgot about it for many years. Last year, 2013, I opened a box of knick knacks that I had packed from the move. I had been waiting for a shelf to put it on in the new home. Much to my surprise there was my little air fern! Healthy and chugging along! Not very much bigger but still very much alive. I now have it in my kitchen again. It's still small, about the size of a baseball with fronds the size of a wooden pencil. Very cute and bright green.
I will be buying more soon, and keep them up and away from the cats.
