In my pots: Knotweed/persecaria/Spotted Lady's Thumb
In my backyard: pokeweed.
Anyone else have an ongoing battle with these? I'd say they're both flowering weeds.
The persecaria/lady's thumb -- especially is my current nemesis, because in in my front porch pots.
I don't know WHERE it came from -- and now it's in THREE of my 20" pots.
I don't like it -- so I HIGHLY DOUBT I planted in but don't remember....
You ever notice something new and say, "What the heck?"
I may have to dump all the 20" pots and start over.
My yard guy said it could have been transported by birds. Darn them!
It you happen to like spotted lady's thumb no offense intended..
And Lrd knows it's hardy, easy grow and no maintenance.
AARRGGGHHH!
(In my back hillside area I've got an ongoing battle with pokeweed!)
I unwittingly brought rattlesnake weed with me when I dug up half my Atlanta garden to transplant to our new N.C. yard. It is horrible---beyond words. So bad I carry around a separate bag for it when I weed and then burn it cause i don't want to spread it in the landfill or anywhere else.
Right now it is creeping charlie. It somehow got into some key beds with my lax gardening...now I'm trying to get it out! It loves to grow in mulch and it loves sun.
And garlic mustard. Ugh. I went easy on it this year because I'm putting in new plants. I'm trying not to overexert myself. But I hate it. From one of my new books, I've learned that it kills beneficial fungi in the soil. So it is not only ugly, smelly and annoying...it is dangerous. To beloved native plants.
I guess I should be fortunate that I only have grassy weeds in my yard, so at least it looks like "nice" green lawn to 95% of the population. But for the rest of us, all we can spot are the imperfections. My nemesis is Poa Annua. I didn't put down my barrier last fall because I was overseeding. Now I'm paying for it!
The seeds can blow in from miles away. The roots are difficult to pull up. If you mow it short, it immediately forms seed heads down next to the ground. The seeds get into dog ears and noses and other places and cause expensive vet bills.
