I dont know anything about growing in zone 7 but if it is too late a lot of the big box stores and grocery stores are slashing prices on containers of plants. You could always fill in with them and they're already at maturity so it's instant gratification.
plant some annuals like poppies, cosmos, daisies, larkspur, snapdragons in zone 7, NYC area? I have a lot of blank spots.
With the pattern we're in, we should be seeing an early frost this year. Using the closest station to you, JFK normal frost date is November 11. The earliest was October 9 in 2001.
My normal is mid October.
So if you can plant either some plants that tolerate frost or cool season pants go for it. Otherwise it's too late for most stuff.
I'm not familiar with the ones you mentioned. Also factor in current weather. Is it warm enough for them to get going to enjoy in a few weeks?
I don't know if mums grow down there, but in about two weeks, that's what I will put in for my bare spots (grown plants from the nursery). I'm Zone 5A.

It's way too early. First of all, the seeds need a winter's chilling period, and secondly, if they already are chilled, they will sprout and then die before winter. Be patient.
It's too late in the season. By the time they are ready to bloom, we'll have a frost that kills them.
Just buy some annuals (plants, not seeds) from the garden center and stick them into your empty spots. You might also divide some plants that you already have and get two for one. Cosmos and daisies would be good because they bloom over a longer period of time and are often in bloom at this time of the year anyway.
If you want something that will bloom in fall, besides buying a pot of mums, buy sedum Autumn Joy. You only need one because you cut off a piece and stick it in the ground and you get another instant plant. They look great in the fall when everything else is dead.

If you want to take advantage of the sales of potted annuals at the garden centers/big box stores, I say go for it. My snapdragons lasted well past the first frost last year, and I am in zone 5b.
Of course, it is almost time for mums and winter pansies, so you might want to wait until they hit the stores to fill in your empty spaces.
I wouldn't plant most seeds now, but, it is a great time to harvest seeds from plants that you may already have in your garden.
Now that I think about it, I actually did throw some marigold seeds a couple of weeks ago, but they come up really fast and again, will last well into the cold weather (here) as long as it is sunny.
