Finding a Landscape Designer (nursery)

We're looking for a landscape designer to help us with some projects around the yard.

I've seen referrals for independent designers as well as for those who work through a nursery. My gut tells me that an independent designer would be better than someone who is attached to a nursery and therefore promoting the products sold by that nursery. Is that generally correct?

We've never worked with a landscape designer before and aren't sure what to look for so any experiences you have would be helpful.
