Interestingly enough the revised USDA hardiness zone maps show a circle of 6a right over Lawrence and the immediate surrounding area. In addition we are located on an areal high point and average 5 degrees warmer than the official reporting station's (airport) lows and 2-3 degrees cooler than the reported highs.

That does not surprise me, the ridge areas south of Lawrence (lived there previously) are milder at night because the coldest air drains right by the river. North Lawrence (where the official observations are taken) usually will get to -10F or lower and I have seen lows colder than -20F there. So I do think the northern areas are zone 5. Microclimates are interesting to study.
