That does not surprise me, the ridge areas south of Lawrence (lived there previously) are milder at night because the coldest air drains right by the river. North Lawrence (where the official observations are taken) usually will get to -10F or lower and I have seen lows colder than -20F there. So I do think the northern areas are zone 5. Microclimates are interesting to study.
