I can remember going on vacation as a teen somewhere in the mid-west and seeing all the lightening bugs floating around. I caught one betwwen my hands and it's light would blink off and on. I'd like to know what states have lightening bugs in them.
If you live in a state where lightening bugs live can you tell me which state you are in?
I know Nebraska has them. I don't live there but grew up visiting there every summer. (in Ord, southwest corner of state) We would go out and "play" with them every night.
We have them here in Missouri and it's one of the things about summer I find most enchanting! I live in the country and in the period just before dusk and dark the lightning bugs come out...by the tens of thousands. As you drive along the roads, the forest and meadows twinkle with blinking green lights. My mom is from Massachusetts, but lived in California since 1955 and I promised her when she was coming to see me here that she'd see lightning bugs. When she came, I had literally thousands twinking across my front acreage in the evening over the lawns. Behind the house in the woods they go way up in the trees and flash. She was spellbound. We sat in lawnchairs drinking potent martinis and watched the lightning bugs on several evenings during her visit. Ours here flash bright green lights. I don't know about other areas. But they're long gone now Have to wait for next year.
I know they're in southeastern Virginia too as when I was in the Navy, that was the first place I ever saw them, in Norfolk.
They have been in just about every country I've been too. Don't remember seeing any in England, was just too darn cold in the North country, probably are some in the southern areas. Some weird ones in Korea.
Something like 2000 different models of these bugs. About like mosquitoes come in a huge variety. The super ones are in the tropics, places like Malaysia, entire hills are lit up.
Hate those bugs where the female thinks it is ok to eat the males. H'mmm but a lot of females try that in all persuasions, what is with them girls.
we have them here in NH and I know VT and Maine have them as well. when I was a kid I would catch them and squish them in my hands so my hand would lite up lol And now I yell at my kids for doing that Man I'm such a hipocrate lol.

Let me know if you get a negative rep strike from an offended feminist and I'll counter it!! You're hilarious. Actually, I know they're in Germany too as they call lightning bugs "Gluehwurme", or glow worms.

My aunt and uncle live just outside of Conway, (which isn't far from Springfield), and I remember one June a number of years ago, while we were visiting them, the lightening bugs/fireflies, (are they the same thing, by the way? I always thought so, but I don't really know that ) were out in abundance. My son was absolutely fascinated! We sat in the back yard for hours, and he chased and played with them, caught them in jars, etc. He's twenty now, but he still remembers that.
