Wild Onions...... (flowers, iris, growing, grass)

My garden is getting full of wild onions.......and they are hard to pull. Where do they come from? What can I do? Thank you,

They come from little bulbs in the soil. The best way to get rid of them is through the use of herbicides. Here is a good article. BTW, wild onion and wild garlic are often confused, but are treated the same way. HGIC 2311 Wild Garlic & Wild Onion : Extension : Clemson University : South Carolina

It should be noted that ALL species of wild onion/garlic are edible. If it smells like onion or garlic, its edible.

I use this for weed pulling. It usually pulls the onion bulbs fairly well.

Many times bitter...but they are edible.

Only way to get rid of them is to dig them out. Deeply.

Seems like mother nature has a "weed" cycle with a new twist every year: Chickweed, crab grass, wild onions....

Next year? Who knows.

I have had onions growing in my yard for years, and every year there seems to be more and more of them. I always mow down the grass before the onion grass flowers, so I don't know how these things keep spreading.

they spread by bulblets underground just like daylilies and iris and others. Not everything that flowers reproduces mainly that way.

I suspect they are windblown seeds, although wild onions do also reproduce by growing 'bulblets' alongside the main mother bulb.

In flower beds, I kill them like this;

I let the onions grow until there's about 4-6 inches above the flower bed foliage.

I mix up weed and grass killer.

I put on a nitrile glove, followed by a cheap jersey cotton glove that I've cut off the wrist collar.

I dip my gloved thumb and forefinger into the weed and grass killer, squeeze off excess, then grasp the onion stems and pull them through my fingers, roughly.

This method will also kill the bulblets, as they're connected to the mother bulb.
