I'm looking to do a garden for my balcony and wondering if you guys have any suggestions. I live in a city that has 4 seasons, but relatively mild winters.. but also does have a few snow storms and very cold nights every year.

I'm a 25 year old guy, I don't want to do anything feminine or have a bunch of flowers. Also, I'd prefer to not attract bees.

Maybe some types of vegetables? Small trees... cacti? I think that could be cool. Any suggestions on how to get started or what I could do? I will start it in ~August since that's when I move.

Cactus will not do well if it is too wet (snow). How large is the portion of the balcony that you will dedicate to teh garden and what is the exposure? FWIW, I would try container gardening and see how you like it. August may be late to start veggies however, depending up where you are moving to.

A small fig tree might meet your needs.
