Years and years ago, as in back in the 1950s, a lot of people used to believe that you couldn't transplant peonies and get them to bloom again. Well, my mom successfully did that when we moved from one farm to another farm, but she moved them in the fall. Most of the literature says to transplant in the fall, too.

My question is, can I move peonies in the spring and get them to bloom next year? I have several that are planted in the wrong place because they are too close to bushes. I would like to move them out and put hostas in front of where they were. I would replant the peonies elsewhere.

Since the plants already have buds, I would cut them back before they bloom, dig them, and then replant the entire plants. I wouldn't divide them because they have only been there a relatively few years (as opposed to the decades that some of my peonies were in my mom's garden). Since I have city water, watering them through the summer will not be a problem.
