Early this Spring, I wrote a post here asking for info regarding my sq foot garden failure last year. Several suggested that I have my soil tested by the state Agriculture Dept. I did that. The results showed a severe deficiency in nitrogen.

In early April, I dug out every square of my sq foot garden and remixed the soil with nitrogen, azomite, kelp, organic fertilizer (slow release) and earthworm castings. Then I planted my vegetable/herb garden in early May. Since they started growing, I have given them compost tea once a week too.

I am here to report that whatever I did, it is working....and I mean working!! The plants are growing as if they were on steroids. I have never seen such growth, vigor and potential output. The tomatoes have almost tripled in size, they are loaded with flowers, etc. The squash is in full bloom ...at least 10 blooms per plant. The peppers all have a huge number of flowers/baby peppers. The herbs are gigantic!!

I don't know what was responsible for this amazing turnaround. I suspect it is the amendments I put into the soil...and I am especially interested in the benefits of azomite. I have read extensively about it and all reports were glowing.

Just wanted those who have had problems with your sq foot garden that getting soil tested and then seriously amending it are well worth the time and expense!!!! I am a very happy gardener.

Good for you!

Nitrogen moves in and out of the soil very quickly. By the time you got your test results back, most likely the results did not reflect your actual soil condition. It is often the case that nitrogen is the limiting factor. But you can burn your plants if you add too much, so adding modest amounts regularly is a good idea.

The minerals you added are a long-term investment.
