We left a mower out in the rain and later that night when we realized it, we went out and covered it.
Now it won't start. It clearly tries to start. The spark plug wire is slightly rusty but the plug appears to be firing. We cleaned the spark plug wire's metal clip, engine turns over easily and effortlessly but won't start.
We'll try another plug.

Any other thing to try?

I would suspect that water has gotten into the carburetor, and your first few pulls sucked it into the combustion chamber. I would first try taking off the air cleaner, and holding your thumb or palm over the intake, pull the starter cord slowly 2-3 times to suck fuel in. Then try starting again, if it goes replace the air filter and mow.

It may also be that water got into the magneto, and if so will have to dry out before it will run. If it got rusty, it may have to be removed and gently sanded to remove the rust. You won't know without removing the cover and starter cord.

If it has a "kill switch", that could be shorted if water entered it. WD-40 is a water displacement formula and can be sprayed in it to help that problem.
