What are the signs that the fruit of the Hottentots fig is ripe for eating?

"Carpobrotus edulis"
(AKA: 'Freeway Ice Plant')

We have some in our yard that are just winding up their flowering season, and have never tasted them before. So, would like to give them at least a 'taste test'!

They are a reddish brown colour when ripe to eat according to...
