Is there any tradition of giving living flowers for 4th of July? Probably not.

It seems to be fashionable to give potted azaleas and potted hydrangeas for Mother's Day. All the stores had huge displays of them. I spotted a pale pink ruffled azalea with white border that I really wanted, but didn't want to pay $25 for a tiny little azalea plant.

Well, lots of azaleas in big displays means they don't all get sold. My local ding and dent grocery store received a big shipment of leftover azaleas and hydrangeas. I got my pink azalea for $3.95 and a nice hydrangea that looked wilted marked down to $1. A bit of water and some kind words brought them both right back.

It's probably not worth hanging out at the overstock store waiting for 4th of July rejects. Although I've seen several large displays of orchids for sale this week. Is it a tradition to give orchid plants for 4th of July?

Those orchid plants are very popular lately, at the grocery stores, big box stores, etc. No wonder - nice mark-up on a very showy plant that probably won't bloom again for a few years or ever. So buy another one to get those wonderful blooms again - nice cycle! Yeah, I've done it.

As for any tradition of giving flowers on the 4th, I've never heard of it but any place that sells plants is bound to have a display of red, white, and blue (purple?) petunias to encourage you to plant a patriotic display!

Good buy on your wilted plants, I look for them too.
