Cucumbers have male and female on the same plant.
Could your problem be a lack of pollination?

Maybe it has something to do with this: Supreme Court rules states must allow same-sex marriage - CNNPolitics.com

no but seriously.....not sure why pollination wouldn't occur given that i have close to 20 separate plants in 2 separate rows and it's pretty plush....

Cucumbers (as well as squash and pumpkins) have the fruit behind the blossom

Cucumbers may not set fruit because the first flowers were all male. Both female and male flowers must be blooming at the same time. This may not happen early in the plant's life so be patient.
Lack of fruit may also be due to poor pollination by bees, especially if prevented by rain, cold temperatures, or insecticides

I have been wondering why my squash blossoms don't have a fruit behind them.

All of the above plants tend to send out many males alone before the females, but don't ask me why. I have the same problem but it's no different than any other year. I have a greenhouse, but even outdoors there is a bee shortage in many areas so learn to hand pollinate for a better yield. It's very easy, just use a soft bristle artist's brush.

Maybe it's natures way of telling us 'more intelligent life forms' that same sex anythings won't produce offspring?

(removing sarcastic tone)...

I have had the same thing happen with zucchini a couple of years in a row. I finally stopped trying to grow it because it was so frustrating.
