Gardening here in Phoenix wouldn't be so challenging if it weren't for the wide-spread zinc deficiency of he soil. more accurately put, it's the soil and water alkalinity.
Colorado and other western, dry states have this problem also. I have to add zinc chelate almost on a bi-weekly basis. I'm almost through with fighting this battle.
For new gardeners in arid areas, zinc deficiency shows up as small, deformed new leaves. The plants lack vigor, and the new leaves can also become chlorotic and have tip-burn.
