To be fair, this is in a botanical garden near my friend's home in PA. This exotic beauty lives there in the butterfly forest. I've never seen anything like it. Anyone know the name? She took the picture and didn't catch the name.

I took the picture above at the Phipps Conservatory Autumn flower show. The theme this year is Japanese culture in gardening. Anyway I had not considered Chinese lantern since I have only ever seen the orange ones but on doing so e research on google I found this is called a Flowering Maple or Chinese/Japanese bellflower tree. It was definitely one of the most interesting plants among many beautiful and interesting plants on display.

Yes, it is an interesting plant. I've seen them for sale a couple of years ago at a nursery that specializes in orchids-Hausermann Orchids here in Illinois. I've seen them in bloom. And you are right that they are called flowering maple but still, they belong to the genus Abutilon.

Kinda makes me wish I had more natural light in my apartment. I would love to have one at home. Luckily I seem to have the right sort of light for orchids though. And I can visit this one and all of the other amazing flowers and plants at Phipps any time.

I've tried and failed many times to keep an Abutilon alive over the winter. Now I just buy one in the spring, enjoy it all summer, and let it go with the frost, just like the marigolds. Much less heartbreaking than nursing one to death!
