Apple bananas are some of the local favorites. They do have a more sweet yet slightly tart taste than a regular sweet banana. It's a sweet tangy flavor, you won't find it in a grocery store banana anywhere except Hawaii or some other tropical location, though, most likely. I don't think they ship well. The apple bananas are also smaller, not as mealy and have thinner skins than their Cavendish cousins.
I just ate another one and noticed a bit of tartness. I doubt that's what it is though. It has more of a plantain flavor than a regular banana so I guess it is probably some variety of plantain.
