I live in Northern Indiana. I have a flowering vine on a Trellis that comes back every year. It has already started growing, and buds are starting to appear. I don't know what plant is is, and actually my question is general. It gets very pretty dark purple flowers through about June. I just cut off some extensions, and have put them in water. Will they root, and can I transplant them somewhere else? Could they grow inside, and would they still flower?

They seem very hardy to spread, but won't flower once it gets) really hot. Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds like you have the "Jackman" clematis vine. I never tried to root it with cuttings, but I'm sure someone knows for sure. Not sure about growing inside either.. I think it might grow, but not produce blooms.. not sure on that either but I think they need a good amount of sun. I know they like their roots cool.

Thanks Janeck. After looking at the Jackman, mine has much darker flowers, however cleamtis of some sort fits this.

Yeah.. I might have the color wrong.. I have dark purple blooms myself and they are just beautiful. I find the older the plant is, the longer it blooms.

Seeding and Propagation: Clematis Progation

Water might do the trick, but it could cause rot. This is the best way to propagate most plants.

I have put them in a glass of water. The worst that could happen is it won't work!

Paperhouse.. Your ideas seem more sound. I will try that route if the water doesn't work.

Some vines will root. I did a mandevilla in water. But the portion I used was woody and had a couple of nodes on it. 3 out of 4 rotted. With the soil and plastic bag method, I've rooted a lot of stuff.

here are two photos of my Jackmanii

and

in the top photo, you can see the "old wood"
the following year, you will get the new growth on the old wood, as long as you dont cut it all the way back.

Mine will bloom no matter how hot it gets, and will bloom a second time, just not as many flowers come late summer.
The images above were mid-June.

tcs1366- Very pretty! Mine is very close to this, but my flowers are darker. Mine don't bloom as well in heat. Perhaps I am not keeping it wet enough? We have about the same climate, so mine should do ok in heat, but I have never gotten flowers past the end of June.

my plant is quite old. I'm guessing my mother planted it in the early to mid-80's
I took it with when i moved here in 2001.

the blooms tend to fade in the sun.... i do get the very deep purple too, when the first open -- then fade a bit.

it really is stunning!!
