Why doesn't American produce taste as good as Europe's? : TreeHugger

Very sad!! As the most powerful nation in the world, can't we eat good tasting food!! Unfortunately, appearance, size and profit margin are the top priorities here, taste and health comes last!

why do you say that and do you realize many people have never even tasted foreign produce. How about giving us an example?

Because they don't like to throw chemicals and preservatives at every food source in sight. Sad really. They also seem to be less into prepackaged food than most Americans too.

IF you buy at farmers markets, or at small farmer stands you will see the difference. Have you ever grown your own produce?

most commercial produce is grown from hybrids that allow the produce to last a long time without wilting /spoiling, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be the tastiest produce available, but in come cases I think they are just fine. Commercial tomatoes are picked green and ripened with ethylene gas, and I think they taste horrible. Even commercial tomatoes advertised as 'vine ripened' aren't ripe when they are picked, in order to be called vine ripened they just have to have some red on them, most are picked 90% green and ripened like the others, with ethylene gas.

I don't know of anyplace here where you can productively grow fresh produce year round, so if you feel the need to have a tomato, or the like off season, there are gonna be sacrifices. The only other option would be to hop in your private jet, and fly to the nearest in season farmstand.

This completely depends on the country and if we are talking large commercial growers or mom and pop farms just like here. I am not sure where you got the idea other countries do not us chemicals? If we choose to buy organic only here, we can, both in the grocery stores and at farmers markets. It has more to do with the season and freshness than anything else.

You can grow tomatoes year round in Mexico and parts of California, and you can grow them virtually anywhere year round in a greenhouse. But that's not why they are picked green. They are picked green because they won't split or break while being picked and transported and can be stored for long periods and ripened when needed. The downside is their loss of taste and nutrients

Canned tomatoes are picked ripe and retain most of their nutrition and flavor, unless you can get truly vine ripened tomatoes, canned are a better choice health wise. If we quit buying flavorless tomatoes I'm sure farmers would change their horticultural practices but it seems that most people don't care, or they have never tasted a vine ripened heirloom tomato to compare it to.
