Play sand will not work. If you can find bagged play sand, you should be able to find bagged topsoil at the same retailer. Sand has no water retention, so the water will just drain through not benefiting the grass seed at all. If you have many and or deep holes, look into getting a bulk delivery of topsoil.

Any garden center will have top soil in bags.

They use sand around here. I don't understand why they use sand instead of soil. According to someone who did it, the sand levels it out and the Bermuda grows out level over the sand.

Yeah I put all my eggs in one basket not thinking of the sandy southern states. I stand corrected. I guess we will need to find out where abouts the OP resides.

Horticulture or play sand mixed 50/50 with quality top soil works here. Great germination, water retention, nice to walk on.

Sand drains water quickly, so in dry climates you would have to water more often. Bermuda does OK in sand because it doesn't need much water to survive, but typical bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues will suffer. In the case of filling in holes, the seeds will germinate but then with normal watering those spots will turn brown while the rest of the lawn in good soil will be green. Topsoil or potting mix is only $3 a bag as most home centers.

most of your reputable golf courses use a sand/seed mixture on the back of the carts, they probably know what's best...and I think you can take them home with you after the round, but don't quote me on that.

Can't say there is a best brand that I know of. Basically whatever your garden center carries should be fine.
