I saw some seeds for sale online for bushes, they were called "Burning Bush Kochia". I thought they looked pretty cool, but a friend of mine said that is just a fancy name for ragweed, that stuff every other person seems to be allergic to. Can anyone confirm this? They look cool but I don't want to ruin the lives of everyone in the area by planting this stuff if it is ragweed. Lol.
I was asking here because I did Google it. Some sites say it is, some say it isn't. So I don't know which to believe. It seems like either way it is listed as a 'noxious weed'. So maybe I should just avoid it either way.
"Burning Bush Kochia". Its common names include burningbush, ragweed, summer cypress, mock-cypress, kochia, belvedere, Mexican firebrush, and Mexican fireweed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassia_scoparia
Be aware that what is considered a noxious weed is some states is not it others. For example, the common lawn dandelion is listed as a noxious weed in some states but not all. Ditto for the morning glory.
That is a beautiful plant, I would buy seeds for that
I don't believe it is the same as common ragweed which is Ambrosia artemisiifolia.
What it means by common names is that some people may refer to it as ragweed, but it is not the common ragweed.
Sounds like a great plant, as long as you live in the right area and are prepared to tame that monster!
Why someone, somewhere chose to call that kochia ragweed is beyond me. Maybe it looked raggedy to them so they just made up that name. But, 99% of the world would not confuse true ragweed (Ambrosia sp.) with a kochia. Most people know kochia as a tumbleweed.
Alright, cool. Thanks for the help everyone. I live near a farm so if it spreads that fast I don't think I'll plant it myself, don't think the farmer would appreciate it if they invaded his field. I have a relative with a lot of land though, so I'll see if they want to plant them.
