I cut my bermuda grass 3" tall after being gone for two weeks and it was very tall a few days ago. I cut it 2" tall before leaving on the trip. The state of Arkansas agricultural department recommends the bermuda to be cut 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" tall. I will be cutting in again in a day or so. It has already been two weeks since any rain, so I may cut it 2" for now. But I will start watering it. I like the looks of it at 2" more than 3".
Since there has been hardly any rain in most of the East recently, not very often at all. I keep the grass medium/higher because it dries out too fast with afternoon hot sun exposure in certain areas.
Height of cut depends on the type of grass. Fescue and bluegrass need to be cut higher than warm season grasses, such as Bermuda and zoysia.
I have Zorro Zoysia and cut it at a mower setting of 1.5" and it does fine. I used a top-line Honda rotary mower and collect the clippings. If I had the energy and was as dedicated to my lawn like I was when younger, I'd use a reel mower and drop the setting to something under an inch, maybe 3/4". To do that, the lawn has to be smooth and flat (not necessarily level, just flat) for best results. But it'd be a thing of beauty then. Only issue is I'd have to mow maybe 3 times a week in the hottest part of summer, since Zoysia loves heat.
After seeing how much my bermuda has grown in just a few days after cutting it 3" tall I mowed it today at 2 1/2".
