The last couple of years, I have grown, and greatly enjoyed, Lizzano cherry tomatoes. They are little and perfect for salads, kebabs, or just picking off the vine and snacking on. Slightly sweet with full tomato flavor. The plant itself flowers and bears for several months- so it has given a pretty good yield so far.
I have only container gardened the last two years, and am planning on a full garden for next year. Does anyone have any varieties of tomatoes (or other veggies) that they think are exceptional?
This year has been bad due to lack of rain. I have about 40 tomato plants with only 2 of 1 variety. So far, not all that impressed with some of the new varieties I am growing this year. So far, of the new ones, only 3 will return next year. The Chocolate Sprinkles is a cherry tomato that's delicious - roasted some yesterday and they are so sweet and flavorful. The other one that's going to make a return is Cherokee Green. And the other one is a cherry tomato called Italian Ice. Very prolific, a good keeper and quite tasty.
I'm trying some dwarf bushes this year but doubt they will make a return. Hard to see the ripe tomatoes within this compact plant and while nice size, they are nothing to speak about when it comes to taste. I will never do a pea currant tomato again - what a waste of time to try to pick all these little bitty tomatoes. I pray none of them self seed. I actually cut the plant down.
A few that will always be in my garden are Black Krim, Green Zebra, Abe Brown, Chocolate Cherry or Black Cherry.
Next year I plan on doing less tomatoes - I said that this year too, but next year, I mean it

I have 9 plants, all now 5-6' tall and hundred of blossoms but so far only maybe a couple of dozen green tomatoes in our
late summer climate. My favorites are Sungold, Honey Bee, Black Prince, and Golden Boy. The latter is about as large as we dare plant, they are about the size of early girl. Since we can't plant until mid-late May, larger varieties won't have much ripe before late September when we get rain and cold back.
I don't like tomatoes, but I love growing them. This year I have Jet Star, Whoppers, Rutgers, Sweet 100's, and Huskies. I do it because I learned from my parents and just enjoy it. My husband just loves to eat them! I'm very happy with the Jet Stars so far. I have 4 plants with about 25-30 tomatoes on each plant.
Aunt Ruby's German Green is a great green when ripe variety.
For a hybrid I like Pink Girl hybrid. Found it productive and decent tasting.
I have Aunt Ruby's growing as well...nothing yet though. I have another green one growing called Malakhitovaya, but no 'maters on there yet. I'm partial to green and black tomatoes
