Brown Leathery "Stuff" on Post Oak (growing, trees, Illinois)

We're in central Oklahoma. I found a dead post oak limb that has some small round-ish leather-looking things (don't you like my scientific words?) about the size of raisins. We've had oak trees - sometimes five acres of them - for many years but I've never seen this before. Any idea what it might be? Thanks.

Sounds like some kind of fungus. Can you post a picture? My guess would be it started growing after the limb was dead and is not the cause of the limb dying.

caused by wasps and typically not harmful to the tree and apparently have additional benefits as well...
