OK, the person who maintains my yard, tells me that he has seen cases where the he has to cut the popped up gum tree growth up to 10 years after the tree was brought down.

I had this huge gum tree taken down about 6 months ago, the stump was given a heavy run of the grinding machine, but lots of sweet gum growth is coming from different parts of the yard.

What are my options to solve this?

Thanks

I have a couple, and I hate them! I can't remove the two that are in my immediate yard. The roots pop up all over the place, and as you found, if you cut them, they just continue to grow. I've cut them and put poison ivy brush killer on it and it won't grow there, but anywhere else, new growth pops out.

I just looked this up, it may be helpful:

Wish you luck. I may try the above on what stumps are still sending up shooters!

It is shoots that pop up, not roots. We should admire the sweet gum for its resilience and ability to overcome all attempts to destroy it. But at the same time, in the south at least, it is so aggravating. Like bamboo, you just need to keep mowing it down until you starve it. Roundup will also help when applied to the tender shoots, but because there is a lot of nutritional reserve in the stump and underground plant parts it will take a few years until it is really gone. And by then, more little sweetgums will have popped up from seed, so it is a continuing battle on the human side.
