Since our soil is naturally acidic here using pine mulch would be a disaster. Plus I would think pine mulch would burn new seeds. Plus it wont break down as fast which may stunt seedling growth?
You dont have to dispose straw. Leave it be, it will be mowed over or broken down into the soil. Its beneficial in fact to leace it.
The straw is used for 3 purposes.
1. Keep birds from eating the seeds
2. Keep soil and seeds moist
3. Breakdown and provide good loose soil underneath
Thanks all. I think we will use wheat straw to be safe. Here in the south, when it gets warm its hard to keep things wet, so i think the regular straw will hold moisture better.
