So before I moved into this house, someone started to cut down a Vitex (Chaste bush) which was at least 4 feet tall. But the owner got upset and made them stop. So now half the bush is down to the ground and the other half is 4 feet.
It is coming back from the bottom but should I cut down the rest of it to even it up, or just leave it? I guess it was a beautiful purple flowered bush, and now it's a twiggy mess.
At this time of year you are sort of stuck. But how about a compromise? Cut the tall branches back a foot. Then in the dormant season, even everything up.
I cut one down to the ground once, and mowed it with the lawn mower for about 5 years afterwards before it finally stopped sending up sprouts. So yes, you can cut it to the ground and it'll be fine.
It's all leafing out now and I just cannot bear to cut it down. So, even lopsided, I will let it be.
