It might also be an Aruncus. Leaves look very similar to Astilbe, but Aruncus is often a larger, coarser plant. Similar care, etc.

I have seen these leafs in another area in the garden but thought they looked like an elm tree sprouting and asked my hubby to pull it. He doesn't remember if he pulled it or not so out I go to check, thanks!

Good dig out, jacqueg...goatsbeard crossed my mind, but was too lazy to dig it out on GOOG.
Very similar leaves, and similar situ/conditions.

Maybe when/if the OP's plant flowers, they will come back with pics.

Sure, I will, always taking pictures of my garden. I just hope I can find this post then.

Ok more pics. It has grown to about five feet tall(!) and has green small buds on it. Here is a pic full size and a close up. I will be watching to see what those buds bloom like.

Well, it's sure big enough to be goat's beard!

But I don't see any branching on the inflorescences. Trying to think of alternatives...

Here's a bunch of Aruncus photos -

Thanks. The leaves all look different, mine are very jagged. Well I will be watching and waiting. This popped up last year and wasn't this tall. I don't remember if it bloomed at all.

So now the plant is flowering, little white tiny flowers. Not much else. Now they don't look like anything I thought they were.

Reminder, zone 3, plants about 6 feet tall.

Really? It's not fuzzy or hairy at all like the picture. Just little tiny flowers. Will it sprout more to resemble your picture?
