Our Hosta, Hydrangea and Peony were really beat up in a hail storm. Should we trim back a lot or just a little? Any one had this happen?

I'd wait a week, to see which leaves are going to recover even partially. Then see what you have, and cut out the dead leaves.

The more photosynthesizing a plant can do, the faster it will recover.

(Poor babies!)

Thank you. I am not too worried about the Hosta. I know how hardy they are. More concered with the Hydrangea than anything.

I had this happen last year in my raised garden bed after a pretty severe hail storm. My lettuce was shredded (no pun intended), my cucumber plants were pummeled, but survived. The lettuce got pulled up and the cucs looked really rough for a while after I cut out the dead leaves, then recovered nicely.

I'd follow jacqueg's advice and give it a week.

Whack the hostas down, they'll grow back real quick with nice green foliage. The others trim off the damaged parts and watch them recover.
