I am contemplating using rope in the place of a hand rail. What type of rope material will stand up to the elements in a garden surrounding, maybe even ground contact?

Something like this:

Robert took the words right out of my mouth, lol. But it will dry-rot, eventually. Lasts a long, long time though.

Any poly material is going to be subject to UV damage. Nylon will be the whitest and best but expect to replace it periodically.

I've seen stainless steel chains used in that way.

I went to a boat accessory dealer and got some nautical 1' rope, looks to be of nylon material. It's been good for over 10 years.

I've seen marker ropes strung across swimming pools with floats on them. They probably are a rayon mix of some kind. The sun dries them out and they start shedding all these splinters. That stuff is awfully dangerous if someone swallows or gets it in a lung. I agree straight nylon will likely do best. SS chains good idea too, but even pricier, I'm sure.

Synthetic fiber ropes maybe the right one for you.
