Yes, the leaf looks like clematis. But I have yet seen one with such big twisted trunk.

Perhaps a very old clematis armandii. See the size of the vines on these old ones.

I'm seeing one smooth and one with striations. The leaf doesn't have the designs in it like the last pic here where the leaf looks like it has outlines for a stained glass window right on it...very pretty.
