When I bought my late aunt's house in 2017 it was a mess, both inside and out. I've tackled most of the inside projects but the yard has been a bear. The back yard is 90% weeds, the front yard has a mixture of a couple of different grasses and weeds. I've made an island but even with weed paper the weeds still pop up. I spent 6 hours a few weekends ago digging up all the weeds in the front flower bed. They're back.

I decided to throw up the white flag and hire TruGreen to take care of the rest. They will do what is necessary to kill these darn weeds and help me grow some grass in the back yard. Unfortunately they don't do any of the weeds in the beds; that is still my responsibility. It's not easy gardening in SW Florida; we either get too much rain four months out of the year and then very little the other 8 months. I don't have a sprinkler system and it takes me all day of moving the hose around with the manual sprinkler to do the whole yard. Right now I'm missing my condo......

Sorry, but I wouldn’t expect much from TruGreen.

With just minimal effort, you can save plenty of money and yield far superior results.

What's wrong with TruGreen? They just out and aerated my yard yesterday. That has probably never been done in at least 25 years.

Aerating is one thing, but based on the feedback from others here on their lawn service, it’s not worth the money.

Aerating should be good for your lawn in the long run but don't expect to see any short term results. I've seen two types of aerators, one that pulls plugs out of the ground and the other just punches holes. My neighbor goes over the border of out yards with his aerator that punches holes. I think it does more compacting of the soil than aerating. Here is a cheap good tool to aerate and you won't compact the lawn.

Recommend aerating in the fall and yes, it makes a difference.

Aerating does not compact the soil.

Not usually, but it depends on the equipment that is doing the aerating and he type of aerating. My neighbor's aerator was simply punching holes in the ground and not pulling plugs out of the turf.

Would definitely recommend the one that pulls plugs which is most commonly used.

Definitely aerate with the machine that pulls the plugs out. Home depot rents them pretty cheap. I usually do it every fall before I overseed.

It's really made a difference in the soil compaction. Before I could barely get a shovel into my lawn and dig a hole...now I can easily get a shovel blade into the soil
