I have been watching this volunteer plant grow in a small flower garden area (S. Cal). I don't recognize at all, but with some research I am pretty certain it is Tobacco Tree (Nicotiana glauca). After reading about it, I'm pretty sure I will pull it out. It is listed as a rather invasive plant, and can get to 10' high. Does anyone know about this plant? Having never seen one around here, I am wondering where it came from.

This plant has been introduced to almost the whole world now so most likely somebody else in or near your location has it growing on their property and the seeds have come from there. The seeds are primarily spread by water but can also be spread by birds, animals and wind and, inadvertently, in imported garden soils, landfill soils and commercial potting soils used by nurseries that are growing nursery plants for sale. It is invasive, as you've determined already, so if you're sure your volunteer is tree tobacco and are concerned about it then you should pull it up before it gets a chance to produce flowers and seeds. https://www.cabi.org/isc/datasheet/36324

Zoisite, Thank you for the input. I downloaded one of those apps where you take a picture and it identifies the plant...Tree Tobacco. I did pull it out. In another garden I have some Nicotiana alata and I really enjoy the blooms as well as the hummingbirds and butterflies they attract. Now that I know what the tree tobacco is, I realize I do see it sometimes in the wild around here. When it is 7 or 8 feet tall and in bloom, it looks different.
