I'm not sure what that is, but it looks to me as if it's a shrub that's growing back after being cut to the ground.

It is a weed. Pull it out because it will stifle your tomato plant robbing it of water, nutrients and sunlight. I see these growing in my yard all the time.

Good ID and advice from antinimby. Pokeweed. I thought it looked familiar but it doesn't grow here in the PNW.

Be sure to pull it up, roots and all, don't just cut it off at ground level. It's a perennial so if you leave the roots in the ground it will grow right back again, every year. The whole plant is poisonous, especially the roots and seeds.

It kind of looks like poke sallet, but I'm not sure. We used to eat it when I was a kid.

I understand you can eat it if you cook it twice. Some say three times. But why bother in modern times.

And especially when one is directed not to touch it with bare hands.

Dig ALL of the roots out....on an established plant, the roots can be as big as your wrist.
