So I have one large old rosebush (I have only one in the yard) which looks very clearly to me like it's got the dreaded Rose Rosette disease. Two questions, and I think I already know the answer to #1.

1. Is there anything to do other than pulling the whole bush out? Has anyone known of any success at keeping the disease at bay?

2. What is the future for planting roses in general? Is this going to be something like Dutch Elm Disease (some websites act like all roses will be extinct), or more like powdery mildew where there are varieties that are more or less resistant, in other words something that's endemic but there'll be a lot of healthy plants too? (In other words, should I just write off the possibility of having rose bushes, ever?)

Even practicing good gardening techniques I have been hit with the virus. I believe eventually it will be even more widespread. All roses. Mime were old resistant Earth Kind roses and I believe that Knockouts are being hit also. Sad but pull out and get rid of the plant !

Shovel prune it, kill it with fire, and move on.

There are plenty of roses that are easy to grow and resistant to disease. Find them, plant them, and enjoy.

Rose Rosette

Here is a thorough article about this viral rose disease. This is new to me. I had no idea.

The article gives instructions for disposing of a sick bush.
