Hello, I live in Kwethluk, and have been a homeowner for 15 years. I even have irrigation system for the lawn, and water bills run around $150/month of my 5,000 sqft lawn size during the 2 summer months.

Anyway, last 2 years my grass lawn seems getting into worse shape. Every springs, I notice some patches of "light brown" grass which I think had died over the winter, and my grass are getting thin!

Every spring early-to-mid April, I put down fertilizer with Crab grass prevention.
Every year, I probably use spray-herbicide 2 to 3 times to spread on targeted area with weeds. Mostly broadleaf.

Question:
1) What do you think that I am missing here? I am thinking going nuclear with putting down say $200 worth of bluegrass seeds, and then put on an inch layer of top soil during Sept. Heard this really help with seeds germination and giving a better soil base.

2) I recently read that I should put down a lawn fertilizer during the late autumn to help seeds germinate in spring.
Any recommendation about where to buy good organic lawn fertilizer??

Thanks!

Light brown grass, in my part of the world, means grubs.

Don't know what it means by you, but Cornell Cooperative or a county agricultural cooperative would know (like https://www.uaf.edu/ces/).

I don't apply a fertilizer or herbicide. For one thing, too much nitrogen damages lawns. Also nitrogen leeches into my town's water supply causing algae.

https://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/articles/nitrogen.html and https://www.epa.gov/nutrientpollution/issue

If you leave the grass clipping when you mow, it acts as a fertilizer.

I aerate my lawn. After aerating, reseeding a lawn is more effective.

Yes, it's in western Alaska and Kwethluk's arid cold climate year round is not hospitable to grass for lawns.
