So, I bought this royal palm (roystonea regia) on Friday because I like the look of these palms but I'm wondering if it will survive here. We get the hot summers and winters are generally mild but we do get some frosts, not extreme frosts but it can get cold here. I've seen a few royals in Phoenix, AZ but their winters are milder. If it's too cold, would it be ok in a sunny window? How much sun do these palms need?
Also, random question, are there any palms in general in the Intermountain West north of St George, UT, because I never saw them in central or northern UT or NV?
I would doubt it as Royal Palms are a true tropical palm. They do not start to grow until south Florida about where Coconut Palms also begin. I believe it is the national tree of Cuba. They like lots of humidity which is rather scant in Nevada.
You could try of course. Lots of water and maybe some frost protect via Christmas lights in the winter. You might get lucky.
Royal palms love tropical heat and humidity, although they grow here in coastal Los Angeles fairly well. In Las Vegas it's going to be a big challenge because you have such extreme temperatures.
Never gonna work there. Any temps below 27f for more than 4 hours will kill them like Coconut palms.
