My daughter just gave me a 275 gallon white plastic "rain barrel" in an aluminum cage. It looks great, but it has a label of 1824 6 on the side. I googled it. It is sodium hydroxide... can I simply rinse this out with water? or should I simply find a different container?

The problems is that you don't know the concentration of the NaOH and if the container was decontaminated. Unless otherwise proven, you must treat it as concentrated NaOH and as hazardous waste. That mean unless you have the proper knowledge and equipment, you need to leave it alone. NaOH reacts with water generating heat. This can result is boiling and splattering of corrosive material. You may also note that one of the uses of NaOH is dissolving flesh.

The above is a worst case. But unless you know otherwise you have to assume a worst case.

A nice gesture but I would suggest that you pass on doing anything with this .
