For the last few years we have been going with begonias because as I recall there was an issue with impatience. We put in two full flats so lots of color here in eastern PA. Thinking about giving impatience another try. Thoughts?

It's hard to be patient with begonias.

Sorry, couldn't resist. (It's "impatiens" - not "impatience.")

That’s how long it’s been, I even forgot how to spell them!

I've had great luck with New Guinea impatiens here in western Pennsylvania.

The variegated foliage is lovely in its own right and the flowers bloom in a wide variety of colors from late spring until the first hard frost of the fall. Some of them can also handle a bit of sunlight, so that's an added bonus if you have some areas in your yard that are only partially shaded.

As long as you keep them moderately watered, they require minimal care with no need to deadhead the spent blooms. The deer don't seem to be overly interested in snacking on them, either.

I plant both, but are you looking for "statement" plants or bedding plants ? Some begonia's and impatiens can tolerate full sun, some not so much.

New Guinea Impatiens, or SunPatiens can tolerate full sun. Common Impatiens like shade.

Dragon Wing Begonia bloom all summer in the heat of full sun, I use them 3 to a large urn for a statement, sometimes with white trailing vinca in between.

Tuberous Begonia like shade.

I've always liked the double begonias as opposed to the regular ones; some of them look like roses. I agree about New Guinea impatiens as well.

The impatiens were killed off by powdery mildew. I have not tried them since, although some friends have and they were fine. I like the begonias of all types - less fussy in the sun and drought.

I'll be learning from the posts in this thread. I have some impatiens growing from seeds.

What was your issue with impatiens? Always had the neighbors rave about them, planted in shade of course.

About 8-9 years ago on Long Island the entire island had the impatiens wiped out by powdery mildew and the growers did not produce them. I believe it was not unique to NY but I could be wrong on that.
