There is no such thing as a GOOD lawn tractor any longer.
Until you get to the GARDEN tractor level (with a real transmission) you're spinning your wheels.
(zero turns aren't immune to the CVT issues)
One of the biggest problems with most lawn tractors today is the cutting height. Of course many people live in areas without trees or rocks, but many of us have trees and rocks. It is impossible to buy any lawn tractor with lots of height adjustment. Most companies only offer 4.5" and they lie about that because they measure that height on a level surface. Roots and rocks can be shoved up by frost. Years ago many manufacturers offered 6"+ inches of adjustment. You just cannot find any such critter today.
If you hit a rock there are good chances are that you'll break the spindle and that will cost you over $100 (unless you do the work yourself). Most of the spindles are just white, brittle, metal and will not take a beating.

Right on, "Garden Tractor" is what you want. I have a JD 318 that will be celebrating it's 37th birthday this Spring. I have spent less than $600 dollars on repairs for it, not counting batteries, tires, hoses, etc.

Pbbt.. Modern 'Garden Tractor' my fanny. You want something that will last, not kick the dust and can run almost all year on a tank of gas?
My son's cub.
Our old Farmall A when we lived in WV.
They last multiple lifetimes. Ain't no 'green' in this family!

Those are great looking tractors but a bit large for my 1/2 acre. My uncle always had Farmall's on his farm.
