What you are doing wrong is tipping your lawn mower over with fuel in it.
As someone stated it's vented, your lucky it will even start again, sometimes they flow into the carb, then the air cleaner. Probably the oil leaked out as well.

I check and change my blade when the fuel is low or empty, your user guide probably tells you the same. If low I can get away with putting it on it's side, never upside down (for most lawn mowers).

Thanks for the clarification. I can still see my dad's red handled Push mover (reel) from when I was a kid. He went to a Briggs and Stratton gas mower and then an electric with a flip handle and though he was the cat's PJ's!!!

I never heard the term push mower so again thanks. I admit to chuckling after I read your reply, for a minute I am sitting here thinking to myself, you mean there was gas in that thing and we pushed it? You made me smile today. Thanks.

I remember when a push mower was actually pushed, not powered with gas.

There are 4 ways to tip a mower. Find the one way that keeps the fuel tank vent up, and you can access the underside, at least part way. You may have to run it dry first if planning to change a blade.

Gas caps are vented. Drain the tank first (or just run it dry)

Are you talking about freeing the blade when the mower gets bogged down with grass? If so, you can free the blade from the discharge port with a stout stick without tilting the mower.

My gas mower still needs to be pushed if I want it to cut grass. Otherwise it will just sit there making a racket.

The engine only powers the rotation of the blade; you still have to propel the mower forward by pushing it.
